Figuring on This (The Low Workbench)

I am in the process of designing and adding a lower level working surface to my main workbench. The main bench is 36.5 inches high and that is a great height to work at the bench while standing or sitting on a stool. I have noted it is also the perfect height for the back area of a jewelers' style workbench.

What I really want is a lower working surface so I can sit in a regular comfortable office chair and work for hours without getting fatigued. I want a working surface down around 30 - 32 inches. I am posting my brainstorming sketches showing how I think about these things.

The first page is totally off the wall and was only my brainstorming. The second drawing is what I am building. The parts list is already kitted as I cut all the parts on my table saw today. Assembly should start tomorrow  but I have a boatload of honey-do's. <sigh>

Time sure flies. Weekends have been full of family activities so bench work was grounded. What's left is putting some sort of finish on the wood. I am thinking of putting a cutting pad on the surface like a place mat, not glued down. They do need replaced from time to time. It's a holiday weekend so maybe I can wrap it up...

Noah would have enjoyed this week end. Not continuous rain but raining every day. I can cut the humidity with a knife. I sweat like a lawn sprinkler and drops are falling everywhere. I did get some shellac finish on the bench project this weekend. I added some pictures over in the main section, listed in my first comment.

I got the clamping puck made from aluminum. I may add a centering pocket in the puck for the screw. Late Monday I was able to get a second coat of polyurethane on the bench top and the exposed side rails. I am thinking of getting at least one coat on the bottom surfaces.

The bench is finished and installed. It works as good as I thought it would. I produced a 2 1/2 minute video that shows the sliding bench in action. This was a great project and I enjoyed building this shop accessory. I have a few things I want to add but now I have to start using it.
